Education & Outreach Program Update

In June HCA launched The Exploring Roots Summer Adventure Challenge. The June challenge encouraged hiking in the Rocky Point Glades in Swope Park. More than 90 people completed the challenge and received prizes from Moosejaw Mountaineering.

Each month Exploring Roots will challenge hikers to explore a trail in one of Kansas City’s natural areas and have the chance to win prizes. July’s featured challenge is in Jerry Smith Prairie and includes prizes from Betty Rae’s Ice Cream, Starlight Theater, KC Zoo and Go Ape Treetop Adventure. Will you accept the challenge?

On June 12 and June 26 HCA concluded the Foxtown East Neighborhood Green Guard Stewardship Program. The final weeks included filed trips to the KC Water building to learn about watersheds, green infrastructure and water quality. Mary Guerra, KC Water, explained the unique features in the facility’s parking lot that manage stormwater runoff and the native plant garden beds.

The final workshop took place at the East High School Agriculture Campus and was led by Bill Coe, founder and CEO of Green Acres Urban Farm and Research Project. The Stewards learned about holistic nature protection, soil health and received a tour of the aquaponic system. The workshops ended with 14 Green Guard graduates and a celebration with cake and fellowship.

The next Education & Outreach Work Group meeting will be Thursday, 9/9/21 at 10 am.
