
Heartland Conservation Alliance is hiring an AmeriCorps VISTA. The VISTA will serve as the Outdoor Education Coordinator. The VISTA will work with community leaders and conservation partners to implement and improve innovative projects to help youth and families access nature and spend more time outdoors. The Coordinator will be motivated, enjoy the outdoors, be a team player and able to work independently in diverse urban communities. Applications are due March 11.
On Monday, January 17 HCA hosted the 8th Annual MLK Jr. Nature Walk with KC Parks and Rec, and Missouri State Parks. 65 people and four dogs attended the guided nature walk that began at MLK Jr. Square Park and ended at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Center. The walk began with a prayer led by Reverend Antoine Lee, the pastor of Central Christian Church. Following the prayer, the group took a 2.5 mile walk led by Nova Clarke from U.S. Fish and Wildlife. The walk concluded at the Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Center where Bill Coe, the CEO and Director of Green Acres Urban Farm gave a speech about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy.
On January 13 the Education & Outreach Work Group met to discuss goals for 2022. The Work Group spent time discussing how to enhance environmental education in Kansas City, and the possible next steps for engaging with community resources while also utilizing the Blue River Report Card and Action Plan. The Work Group also plans to support the outdoor education events led by HCA’s AmeriCorps VISTA.
