Education & Outreach Program Update

The next Renew the Blue Restoration workday is Saturday, May 14, 9:00 a.m. – Noon at Alex George Wetland. Join the team to take down honeysuckle and pick up trash. You can find more dates and register for the workday here or find more dates on HCA’s Community Calendar.

The Green Guard Stewardship Training Program began last month at the Trailside Center. The workshops are funded by KC Water and run through June with the goal of launching HCA’s Stream Team #5145. The Stewards will have the opportunity to learn about water quality testing and an overview of the various components necessary to create a healthier Blue River. The next Green Guard Stewardship Training workshop is Saturday, May 28. The workshop will be taught by Nova Clarke from U.S. Fish & Wildlife, who will lead a kayaking tour of the Blue River.

On Saturday, April 30, Heartland Conservation Alliance hosted the first Heartland Nature Celebration. The event was part of the global City Nature Challenge. Guests visited the Heartland Overlook Preserve for a day that included environmental education opportunities from Take a Hike, KC, The Nature Conservancy, KC Water, U.S. Fish & Wildlife, the Kansas City Public Library, Botanical Belonging, MO Hives KC, and the Resilient Activist. HCA’s Nature Action Crew led guided flora and fauna identification hikes. During the hikes people were encouraged to take pictures of their discoveries using iNaturalist, and every discovery made on the hikes contributed to the greater Kansas City Metro Areas' City Nature Challenge effort.
