Education & Outreach Program Update

United By Blue promises to preserve where we play. For every product sold, they remove one pound of trash from the oceans and waterways through company-organized cleanups. Photo by United by Blue.

On Saturday, August 20 Heartland Conservation Alliance partnered with United by Blue, Corona USA and Oceanic Global to host a trash clean up at Blue River Parkway.

40 volunteers met at Alex George Wetland at Blue River Parkway and cleaned up 490 pounds of trash! After the cleanup, Taco Cacao provided lunch and volunteers celebrated with giveaways and prizes from United by Blue. Thank you to everyone who came out and worked hard to keep our parks clean!

It’s the final month for The Exploring Roots Summer Adventure Challenge! September’s featured trail is Alex George Wetland at Blue River Parkway. Thank you to all who signed up and hiked Cliff Drive Scenic Byway in August! We are especially grateful to the staff from Moosejaw in Olathe who led guided hikes at Cliff Drive.

Keychains have returned! And this month, they’re orange. If there are no more keychains at the trail, take a selfie with one of the signs and show the staff at the pick-up location.

This month hikers who reach one of the three signs posted along the trail can choose from our selection of prizes:

  • Gift cards to ScrapsKC

  • Gift cards to Ceramics and Coffee

  • Tickets to the Toy and Miniature Museum

At the end of the month, we’ll draw three grand prize winners who will receive either Union Station Passes, Friends of the Zoo family membership, or a Nelson Atkins Membership.

You have all month to complete the challenge. The prize pickup location is TBD. Please keep an eye on our social media and the Exploring Roots website for updates.

You can register for September’s hike and learn more about the Summer Adventure Challenge on the website.
