Save the HOP with opportunities from BikeWalkKC.

On Thursday, April 1 we launched "30 Days of Biking KC!" The fundraiser is part friendly competition, part effort to save the Heartland Overlook Preserve, aka the HOP. We have to raise money to save this oak hickory forest nestled by the Blue River. Whether you're part of a team, riding solo or supporting other riders, BikeWalkKC has some great bicycling opportunities in April.

HCA Program Manager Meghan Freeman is a member of the "Blue Wheelers," one of the teams raising money to save the HOP.

  • April 15: FREE: Virtual City Cycling. Learn the rules of the road and cycling confidence in this class from Johnson County Library and BikeWalkKC! Instructors will encourage you to ride farther and explore our region on bikes.

  • April 22, 24 & 25: Women's+ Confident City Cycling. This is a hybrid virtual + in-person offering, and it's over three days. All women, femme, trans, and non-binary people are invited to take Kansas City by the handlebars! This course teaches you to be a safer, more confident rider on trails and city streets. Learn state and local bicycling laws, how to avoid road hazards, and more

  • Some really great, short instructional videos on the BikeWalkKC website. These Ride Smart videos are designed to help you understand how to ride safely, improve your comfort, and your basic rights as a bicyclist.

Finally, check out the Bike Safety 101 poster below. It covers the basics of safe riding from helmet fitting, ABC Quick check, signaling and more!

When you hit the trails, make sure you use the hashtag #humansneednature. We can't wait to see where you ride!

Saving the HOP is part of HCA's goal to provide more environmental education to Kansas City and protect and preserve the Blue River.
