About The City Nature Challenge

The City Nature Challenge started in 2016 as a competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the City Nature Challenge (CNC) has grown into an international event, motivating people around the world to find and document wildlife in their own cities. Run by the Community Science teams at the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM), the CNC is an annual four-day global bioblitz at the end of April, where cities are in a collaboration-meets-friendly-competition to see what can be accomplished when we all work toward a common goal. The Heartland Nature Celebration is one of many events happening around Kansas City during the City Nature Challenge. The event is hosted by HCA and includes opportunities to meet our partners, join a guided hike, and collect valuable data for The City Nature Challenge.

Everyone is invited to the HOP from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and learn about nature. HCA’s partners will have interactive booths so visitors can learn about nature, conservation, water, and more!

The Heartland Nature Celebration encourages people to get outside and learn about the natural spaces in their own backyards. Every discovery made will go toward The City Nature Challenge goals of collecting important information about nature in our communities.

Logistics

Dress for the weather and wear shoes you are comfortable hiking in. Everyone is welcome, including furry friends, to come and enjoy a day in nature!

Trail-friendly snacks will be provided.

Parking is available on the property but is limited. HCA staff will direct you to an available spot when you arrive.

Explore the HOP on a guided hike!

HCA’s Blue River Nature Guide will lead participants on guided hikes around the HOP. The hikes will run every 30 minutes and give you the opportunity to collect the valuable, scientific data for The City Nature Challenge. HCA staff will be available to answer any questions and help out when needed.
