Green Guard Environmental Stewardship Training Program

About the Green Guard Stewardship Program

The Green Guard Stewardship Program, offered by Heartland Conservation Alliance (HCA), is a dynamic initiative designed to connect community members to nature while providing them with the hands-on skills needed to become active environmental stewards in their communities. By preserving local natural areas, participants not only protect the environment but also build a stronger sense of community. As individuals deepen their connection to nature, they also cultivate pride in their neighborhoods and a commitment to preserving the spaces they cherish.

Since its launch in February 2016, the Green Guard program has empowered dozens of individuals to take meaningful action in caring for and protecting the natural world. This program builds environmental leaders from within the community, creating a lasting impact on both participants and the neighborhoods they serve.

Green Guard Stewardship Training

The Green Guard Stewardship Training Program is designed to deepen community understanding and awareness of the environmental issues facing the Blue River. This hands-on training will equip participants with the knowledge and skills to take action as stewards of our waterways and natural areas.

The training is FREE and open to all individuals who are passionate about making a difference in their community with all necessary tools, instruction, and training. However, spots are limited and involve an application process (outlined below).

If you are accepted into the program, requirements for successful program completion include attending all four training sessions OR three training sessions and one volunteer workday (see calendar for volunteer workday opportunities).

Stewards who complete the program will receive an environmental stewardship completion certificate at the final workshop.

This immersive training experience emphasizes:

Water quality education

Invasive species education and management

Positive community fellowship

Opportunities to connect with nature, learn new skills, and develop a lasting appreciation for the health benefits nature offers

Green Guard not only provides the resources needed to make immediate positive changes but also empowers participants to continue their stewardship journey for years to come.

2026 Applications Open in February

The 2025 Green Guard Stewardship Training session has been completed, and the application period is now closed.

The next Green Guard cohort will begin in March 2026, with applications opening in February 2026. When the application window opens, updates and application materials will be posted here — so please check back early next year for the latest information.

Space is limited, and in recent years, demand has exceeded program capacity. We strongly encourage early applications once the submission period opens.
